This is what I listen to when everything feels chaotic all around me.

See the blue skies
From the outside

In the Greek mythology, a chimera is a fire-breathing monster that comes equipped with a serpent’s tail, lion’s head, and goat’s body. Which makes it an odd title for this album which inspires more feelings of tranquility and the need to reach inside of yourself and see what you can find than anything that would scare you. Been a favorite of mine since I was 13.

Portugal. The Man Purple Yellow Red and Blue

All I wanna do is
Live in ecstasy
I know what’s best for me
I can’t help it
It’s this hopeless itch
I just wanna feel (wanna feel)
Purple yellow red and blue

And days like this are sweet
I’m walking in my sleep
It’s a place where I belong
I banged a million drums
Someday I’ll go back home
You’ll pick it up and go

I like it in my head
And caught up in your love

I started really getting into house, electronica, and dance music when I was 13 and would stay up every Friday night to watch something on MTV2 called “MTV2 Dance” which was a four hour block of nonstop dance videos from around the world. (They would later replace that with a block of videos called Monster Mix which aired in the afternoon for one hour and was the reason why I did no extracurricular activities as a high school freshman because I would run home to watch it. My mom used to come into the room and always said it sounded like an art gallery.) I loved it. This kind of music was exactly my jam. It’s where I found out about Ian Van Dahl, Paul van Dyk, BT, Felix da Housecat and Ferry Corsten for the first time. For several years to come, I would buy a lot of LPs and EPs of dance singles from Amazon. Right around my senior year of high school, iTunes started to take off, but while I had an iPod I didn’t fully trust the store system. I bought the CDs to upload the music into my iPod and liked that I had literal hard copies just in case all was lost.

This Telepopmusik video was one of the stranger videos that I can recall watching. But there were a few others that also made the cut - X-Press 2 feat. David Byrne’s "Lazy" and The Crystal Method’s "You Know It’s Hard" (Murder) were also in that mix. And a handful of Aphex Twin videos too.

I do really like this song though. This album wasn’t too bad either even though I feel like it doesn’t get much listening action. “Love Can Damage Your Health,” “Da Hoola,” “Dance Me” were a few of my favorites from Genetic World.
