Sky Ferreira You’re Not The One
I started really getting into house, electronica, and dance music when I was 13 and would stay up every Friday night to watch something on MTV2 called “MTV2 Dance” which was a four hour block of nonstop dance videos from around the world. (They would later replace that with a block of videos called Monster Mix which aired in the afternoon for one hour and was the reason why I did no extracurricular activities as a high school freshman because I would run home to watch it. My mom used to come into the room and always said it sounded like an art gallery.) I loved it. This kind of music was exactly my jam. It’s where I found out about Ian Van Dahl, Paul van Dyk, BT, Felix da Housecat and Ferry Corsten for the first time. For several years to come, I would buy a lot of LPs and EPs of dance singles from Amazon. Right around my senior year of high school, iTunes started to take off, but while I had an iPod I didn’t fully trust the store system. I bought the CDs to upload the music into my iPod and liked that I had literal hard copies just in case all was lost.
This Telepopmusik video was one of the stranger videos that I can recall watching. But there were a few others that also made the cut - X-Press 2 feat. David Byrne’s "Lazy" and The Crystal Method’s "You Know It’s Hard" (Murder) were also in that mix. And a handful of Aphex Twin videos too.
I do really like this song though. This album wasn’t too bad either even though I feel like it doesn’t get much listening action. “Love Can Damage Your Health,” “Da Hoola,” “Dance Me” were a few of my favorites from Genetic World.

There are some songs you just think in your head would really complement a scene in a movie where everyone gets stoned after a dinner outdoors and they just get really in tune with fireflies and bubbles being blown and doing that cobweb dance thing with their arms until someone’s mom shows up and kills the buzz and in actuality everyone’s very sweaty and way older looking maybe even haggard and the main character remembers her life isn’t a Sofia Coppola film and there’s broken glass on the ground around her because she got sloppy while drinking wine. This is just one of those songs!
Pieter Nooten Ship Leaving
On endless loop. (This is what I’m talking about when I mean I’m at my most spiritual when listening to music.)
Jane’s Addiction The Riches
Never lookin’ over my shoulder again
I wanna buy my time and finally own my fate
If you tell me no, then I really must insist
And when the hunt is over, kiss me on my lips
Today is Madonna’s 55th birthday and the Ray of Light album still stands as the best work she ever did.
